Allergen Labelling on Prepacked Food for Direct Sale

Natasha's Law Explained - How can HD Labels help you

What is Natasha’s Law?

Natasha’s Law has been brought in to ensure consumers with allergies can have complete certainty that the prepacked food they’re purchasing is safe for them to eat.

Business preparing and selling food on the same premises currently don’t need to put allergen information on the label so the consumer needs to ask staff how it was prepared & what it contains. This can cause obvious confusion.

From October 1st 2021 Natasha’s Law is being brought into place to ensure foods like these are supplied with a full list of ingredients.

Why is Natasha’s Law being introduced?

In 2016 Natasha Ednan-Laperouse died of an allergic reaction to sesame seeds in a Pret A Manger baguette. Natasha had been reassured by the lack of specific allergen info on the packaging and that false confidence had been the issue. Pret A Manger now list their full ingredients on all of their products. To prevent this happening again “Natasha’s Law” is being introduced in to ensure anyone supplying prepacked foods, provides a full list of ingredients & allergens.

How can HD Labels help?

We have printers starting from just over £200 that can use very low cost labels. We also manufacture and supply blank labels that can be made to any shape or size so we really are a one stop shop for your allergen label requirements.

How to comply with Natasha’s Law

There are 3 things you are most likely going to need to ensure you produce labels that comply with Natasha’s law.

  1. Label Printer – This could be either thermal or inkjet. Thermal will allow you to produce a simple ingredients label using a single colour (usually black) that is lower res and good for tables, barcodes, text and simple logos. If you want to add colour or pictures to you labels then inkjet will be the technology for you.

  2. Blank Labels – We can manufacture labels to any shape or size & we also have a range of “off the shelf” labels. We have a range of materials and adhesives so depending on where your label ends up could effect how it should be produced. There are many options here so we recommend you talk to the team who will be able to guide you.

  3. Software – All of our thermal label printers come with software included that will allow you to produce allergen & ingredient labels. This includes tables, barcodes, best before dates etc and can be programmed to automatically highlight (bold) ingredients of choice such as eggs, milk, etc. This software is called GoLabel and comes with the GoDEX printers and can be installed on multiple machines. It’s quick and simple to use and ideal for those getting into labelling as well as those wanting a more advanced solution that links into databases etc.

Below are some links to give you a little more detail on each of the above points.
